Eating from any Clay is Unlawful Except the Clay of the Grave of Ĥusain (a.s.), For Verily It Is the Cure

Hadith 647

1. Muḥammad ibn Ya’qūb and all of my scholars narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ‘Isā, from Abī Yaḥyā Al-Wāsiťi, from someone who said

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: (Eating from) any clay is unlawful just like (eating) the flesh of a swine. If anyone eats from any clay which leads to his death, I will not establish prayers on him, except the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), for verily it contains the cure for every disease. (However) anyone who eats it to satisfy a craving will not find any cure in it.

1 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ وَ جَمَاعَةُ مَشَايِخِي ره عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنْ أَبِي يَحْيَى الْوَاسِطِيِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ

الطِّينُ كُلُّهُ حَرَامٌ كَلَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ ثُمَّ مَاتَ مِنْهُ لَمْ أُصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ مَنْ أَكَلَهُ بِشَهْوَةٍ لَمْ يَكُنْ فِيهِ شِفَاءٌ

Hadith 648

2. Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan Al-Saffār, from ‘Abbād ibn Sulaymān, from Sa’d ibn Sa’d, who said

I asked Abal Ḥasan (Imam Riďā (a.s.)) about (eating) clay. Imam (a.s.) replied, “Eating clay is unlawful just like MǏTAH, blood, and the flesh of a swine, except for the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.), for verily it contains the cure for every disease and the protection against any fear.”

2 حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ الصَّفَّارِ عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ

سَأَلْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ (ع) عَنِ الطِّينِ- قَالَ فَقَالَ أَكْلُ الطِّينِ حَرَامٌ مِثْلُ الْمَيْتَةِ وَ الدَّمِ وَ لَحْمِ الْخِنْزِيرِ إِلَّا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ فَإِنَّ فِيهِ شِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ وَ أَمْناً مِنْ كُلِّ خَوْفٍ

Hadith 649

3. Abū ‘Abdillāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Ya’qūb narrated to me from ‘Ali ibn Ḥasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Faďďāl, from his father, from some of our companions, who said

Abū Ja’far (Imam Bāqir (a.s.)) or Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: Verily Allāh, the Blessed and the Exalted, created Ādam from clay. Therefore, He forbade (eating) clay on the children of Ādam (mankind). I asked, “What about (eating some of) the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.)?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “It is unlawful for people to eat their own flesh but is it permissible for them to eat our flesh?!!! It is permissible to eat a very little amount from it, as much as a chick-pea.”

3 حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ فَضَّالٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (ع) قَالَ

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى خَلَقَ آدَمَ (ع) مِنْ طِينٍ فَحَرَّمَ الطِّينَ عَلَى وُلْدِهِ قَالَ فَقُلْتُ مَا تَقُولُ فِي طِينِ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ص) فَقَالَ يَحْرُمُ عَلَى النَّاسِ أَكْلُ لُحُومِهِمْ وَ يَحُلُّ عَلَيْهِمْ أَكْلُ لُحُومِنَا- وَ لَكِنِ الشَّيْءُ الْيَسِيرُ مِنْهُ مِثْلُ الْحِمَّصَةِ

Hadith 650

4. Samā’ah ibn Mihrān narrated that

Abū ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq (a.s.)) said: (Eating from) any clay is unlawful for mankind except (eating from) the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.). Allāh, the Exalted, will cure those who eat from it to treat an illness.

4 وَ رَوَى سَمَاعَةُ بْنُ مِهْرَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (ع) قَالَ

كُلُّ طِينٍ حَرَامٌ عَلَى بَنِي آدَمَ مَا خَلَا طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) مَنْ أَكَلَهُ مِنْ وَجَعٍ شَفَاهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى

Hadith 651

5. I found the following in the Ḥadīth of Ḥusain ibn Mihrān Al-Fārisi who narrated from Muḥammad ibn Sayyār, from Ya’qūb ibn Yazīd, who narrated that

Imam Sādiq (a.s.) said: Anyone who sells the clay of the grave of Ḥusain (a.s.) has sold and bought the flesh of Ḥusain (a.s.).

5 وَ وَجَدْتُ فِي حَدِيثِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ مِهْرَانَ الْفَارِسِيِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَيَّارٍ عَنْ يَعْقُوبَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ يَرْفَعُ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَى الصَّادِقِ (ع) قَالَ

مَنْ بَاعَ طِينَ قَبْرِ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) فَإِنَّهُ يَبِيعُ لَحْمَ الْحُسَيْنِ (ع) وَ يَشْتَرِيهِ
