Hadith 986

10-14 ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Mūsā, may God be pleased with him, narrated to us, he said: Ḥamzah b. al-Qāsim al-ʿAlawī narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās b. Bassām narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. Khālid b. Ibrāhīm al-Saʿdī narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Yamānī narrated to us, he said: ʿAlī b. al-ʿAbbās al-Muqriʾ narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād b. ʿAmr al-Naṣībī narrated to us; from Jaʿfar b. Burqān; from Maymūn b. Mihrān; from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-ʿAbbās, who said
"The Messenger of God (ṣ) stood up to give a sermon in our presence. At the end of his sermon, he said, 'God - Mighty and Exalted - has gathered in us ten distinguishing characteristics which He had never gathered in anyone else before us, nor will He in anyone other than us. For within us, He has gathered judgement, prudence, knowledge, prophecy, liberality, bravery, resolve, truthfulness, purity, and self-restraint. We are the Word of Truth, the Path of Guidance, the Highest Example, the Greatest Proof, the Firmest Link, and the Strong Rope. And we are those for whom God has commanded affection. What, therefore, lies beyond truth other than falsehood? Whither, then, are you being led?' (Qurʾān 10:32)"
10-14 حدثنا علي بن أحمد بن موسى رضي الله عنه قال: حدثنا حمزة بن القاسم العلوي قال: حدثنا محمد بن العباس بن بسام قال: حدثنا محمد بن خالد بن إبراهيم السعدي قال: حدثنا الحسن بن عبد الله اليماني قال: حدثنا علي بن العباس المقرئ قال: حدثنا حماد بن عمرو النصيبي، عن جعفر بن برقان، عن ميمون بن مهران عن عبد الله بن عباس قال
قام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله فينا خطيبا فقال في آخر خطبته: جمع الله عز وجل لنا عشر خصال لم يجمعها لاحد قبلنـا ولا تكون في أحـد غيرنا: فينا الحكم والحلم والعلم والنبوة والسماحة والشجاعة والقصد والصدق والطهور والعفاف ونحن كلمة التقوى، وسبيل الهدى، والمثل الاعلى، والحجة العظمى، والعروة الوثقى والحبل المتين، ونحن الذين أمر الله لنا المودة فماذا بعد الحق إلا الضلال فأنى تصرفون
Notes
The Word of Truth refers to Qurʾān 48:26; the Highest Example to Qurʾān 16:60; the Firmest Link to Qurʾān 2:256 and 31:22; and the Strong Rope to Qurʾān 3:103. The Path of Guidance is perhaps an allusion to Qurʾān 4:115 or 47:32 and the Greatest Proof to Qurʾān 6:149. Those whose affection God has commanded is a reference to Qurʾān 42:23. Contemplate, as such, how the Qurʾān's many verses are allusions to the virtues of and guidance offered to us by the person of the Proof of God (ʿas) or criticism for their enemies, as the aḥādīth teach us. And further contemplate how, while the Ahl al-Bayt (ʿas) comment on and explain the meanings of the Qurʾān, the Qurʾān comments on and explains the status of the Ahl al-Bayt (ʿas). Though none understand save those firmly rooted in knowledge (Qurʾān 3:7), who are none other than the True Commentators (mufassirūn), the Ahl al-Bayt themselves (ʿas). May God send His blessings on Muḥammad (ṣ) and the family of Muḥammad (ʿas), hasten their relief, and curse their enemies. Refer to Tafsīr Furāt al-Kūfī under the commentary for 10:32 for a similar tradition reported from Imām al-Ṣādiq (ʿas), this time from Imam ʿAlī (ʿas), who mentions it while giving a sermon in Kūfah.
