10-1 Abū al-Ḥusayn Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Shāh narrated to us, he said: Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad al-Baghdādī narrated to us in Āmid, he said: my father narrated to us, he said: Aḥmad b. al-Sakht narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad b. Aswad al-Warrāq informed us, from Ayyūb b. Sulaymān, from Abū al-Bakhtarī, from Muḥammad b. Ḥumayd, from Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir, from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger (ṣ) said, “I am the most similar person unto Adam, and Abraham is the most similar person unto me in terms of his appearance and his character. God - Mighty and Exalted - gave me ten names from above His Throne. God has given my description and has given the glad tidings of my coming on the tongue of every Prophet that He has sent to their respective nations. He had named me in and spread my name throughout the Torah and has sent forth my mention among the people of Torah and the Gospel. He taught me His Book, and raised me to His Heavens. He derived for me a name from His Own Names and named me Muḥammad (the heavily praised one) while He is Maḥmūd (the Praised One). He brought me forth in the best generation of my nation. He gave me the name ʾAḥīd [which comes from tawḥīd, meaning Divine Unicity and monotheism] in the Torah. It is then by Divine Unicity that Hellfire became forbidden for the bodies of the people of my Nation. He gave me the name Aḥmad in the Gospel as I am praised (Maḥmūd) by the People of Heaven, and God made my Nation those who praise (Ḥāmidīn). He made my name Māḥ in the Psalms of David, as God - Mighty and Exalted - shall obliterate idolatry from the earth through me. He made my name Muḥammad in the Qurʾān as I am praised (Maḥmūd) above all on the Day of Resurrection during the session of judgement; none shall intercede save I. God will give me the name Ḥāshir on the Day of Resurrection, as mankind shall be gathered at my feet. God will give me the name al-Mawqif as God - Exalted is His Splendour - shall make mankind stop before me. God gave me the name al-ʿĀqib as I am the remnant of the Prophets and there shall be no other Messenger after me. God made me the Messenger of mercy, the Messenger of repentance, the Messenger of war, and al-Muqaffī, as I have followed after all of the other Prophets. I am the perfect manager combining all good qualities. My Lord has favoured me and said, ‘O' Muḥammad - God's Blessings be upon you! I sent all the Prophets to their nations speaking their languages, but you I have sent to every red and black one of My creation. I have aided you with a terror with which I have never aided any of my other Prophets, I have permitted booty for you which I have never permitted for any before you. I have given you and your nation a treasure from the treasures of My Throne, the Opening Chapter of the Book (Fātiḥat al-Kitāb) and the closing of Sūrat al-Baqarah. I have made the Earth as a mosque for you and your nation, and made its soil purifying. I have given you and your nation the Takbīr. I have joined your mention to Mine, such that none from your nation shall make mention of Me save that he makes mention of you with Me. Blessed are you, o' Muḥammad, and your nation!’”

Notes
وأرسلتك إلى كل أحمر وأسود من خلقي ("but you I have sent to every red and black one of My creation"): an expression the Arabic philologists and commentators of ḥadīth among the Shīʿahs and Sunnīs take to mean the various nations of people. Some commentators specify that the "red" (أحمر) refers to the Arabs and the "black" (أسود) refers to the ʿAjam, or non-Arabs.
